Born: January 22, 1881. [Died] June 14, 1965. Westport, Connecticut. Romanian-born American educationalist. Taught education at Teachers College, Columbia University from 1913 to 1947, then moved to the University of Manchester in England as the first professor of American studies. After retiring in 1950, he worked as an editor for the weekly educational magazine School and Society in New York. In 1946, he came to Japan as a member of the American Educational Mission. His major works include Conflicting Theories of Education (1938) and American Education in the Twentieth Century (57).
