Born: January 22, 1881.
[Died] June 14, 1965. Westport, Connecticut. Romanian-born American educationalist. Taught education at Teachers College, Columbia University from 1913 to 1947, then moved to the University of Manchester in England as the first professor of American studies. After retiring in 1950, he worked as an editor for the weekly educational magazine School and Society in New York. In 1946, he came to Japan as a member of the American Educational Mission. His major works include Conflicting Theories of Education (1938) and American Education in the Twentieth Century (57).

ルーマニア生れのアメリカの教育学者。 1913～47年コロンビア大学のティーチャーズ・カレッジで教育学を講じ，次いでイギリスのマンチェスター大学に移りアメリカ研究講座の初代教授となる。 50年退職し，ニューヨークで教育週刊誌『スクール・アンド・ソサエティー』の編集に従事した。 46年アメリカ教育使節団の一員として来日。主著『教育理論の葛藤』 Conflicting Theories of Education (1938) ，『20世紀アメリカの教育』 American Education in the Twentieth Century (57) 。
