Copeland
American composer. Born in New York to Jewish Russian immigrant parents. In 1921, he moved to Paris to study under N. Boulanger and others, and also studied piano under the great Spanish performer R. Viñes (1875-1943). His Symphony for Organ and Orchestra (1924, revised as Symphony No. 1 in 1928) attracted attention in the American music world, and he had connections with Koussevitzky and others. His avant-garde style, with many dissonant sounds such as his Piano Concerto (1926), which incorporated jazz idiom, attracted attention. In the 1930s, he changed his style in order to connect with the general audience. He gained fame with his orchestral work "El Salon Mexico" (1933-1936), which premiered under the direction of his friend Chavez, and came to be regarded as a leading figure in American composition with his ballet music such as "Appalachian Spring" (1944), performed by the ballet company of his close friend M. Graham. Other notable works include the ballet music "Rodeo" (1942), commissioned by the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, "Clarinet Concerto" (1947-1948), and "Symphony No. 3" (1944-1946), both commissioned by Benny Goodman. → Ginastera → Related article Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo
