Ardabīl (English spelling)
A regional capital of East Azerbaijan Province in northwestern Iran. It is 61 km from the Caspian Sea and close to the border with Azerbaijan. It is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,400 m, at the eastern foot of Mount Sabalan (4,811 m), and the cold weather lasts until late spring. In the past, trade with Russia was conducted via the Caspian Sea. There are industries such as cement and carpets. It is known as the place where Safi ad-Din founded the Safavid Sufi order in the 13th century and where his descendant Ismail I founded the Safavid dynasty. The tomb of Safi ad-Din in the northwest was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 2010 along with the surrounding buildings. In 1827, the Russian army invaded and robbed the library, which was the largest in Persia at the time. The inhabitants speak Turkish. Population: 418,262 (2006).

イラン北西部,東アゼルバイジャン州の地方中心都市。カスピ海から 61kmの地点にあり,アゼルバイジャンとの国境に近い。サバラーン山(4811m)東麓,標高 1400mの高原に位置し,寒さは晩春まで続く。かつてカスピ海経由でロシアとの貿易が行なわれていた。セメント,絨毯などの工業がある。13世紀サフィー・ウッディーンがサファビー・スーフィー教団を創設し,その子孫イスマーイール1世がサファビー朝を創設した場所として知られる。北西部にあるサフィー・ウッディーンの廟墓は 2010年,周辺の建造物群とともに世界遺産の文化遺産に登録された。1827年に侵攻したロシア軍によって,当時ペルシア最大であった図書館の蔵書を持ち去られた歴史がある。住民はトルコ語を話す。人口 41万8262(2006)。
