...A chart containing 50 kana characters, with each set of 5 kana characters arranged vertically in one row and 10 sets arranged horizontally. In the past, it was simply called "Goin" (five sounds), "Goin chart", "Kana-agaeshi" (response chart), or "Kana-agaeshi" (response chart). In the Edo period, the name "Gojuon" arose, and it was also called "Itsura no Koe" (voice of the five sounds) or "Goju Renon Chart" (fifty connected sounds chart). It is usually written from right to left as shown in the chart....
