An island in the eastern part of Indonesia, part of the Maluku Islands. Also called Seram. Located in the northern Banda Sea. Mountainous, with the highest point being Mount Binaiaja (3,019m). Damar (plastic resin) is a specialty of the island. There are oil fields near Bula in the east, and various underground resources such as nickel, bauxite, and iron ore are known to exist.
