A former town in Shiga County in western Shiga Prefecture. It faces Lake Biwa and is served by the Kosei Line and Kosai Road. The Hira Mountains are in the west. The town is an agricultural area. There are swimming pools on the lakeshore, such as Omi Maiko, and it is part of Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar site. It is home to Ono no Takamura Shrine and the grave of Ono no Imoko. Incorporated into Otsu City in March 2006. Area: 71.73 km2 .
