Otoneri

Japanese: 大舎人 - おおとねり

〘Noun〙 (also "Odoneri") Lower-ranking government officials under the Ritsuryo system. They took turns staying overnight at the Imperial Palace, accompanying the Emperor on trips and running odd jobs. They belonged to the Otoneri-ryo (Offices of the Left and Right Ministers) of the Ministry of Central Affairs, and were assigned to the children and grandchildren of those of the fourth and fifth ranks. The capacity was 800 people each. In the 10th year of the Kōnin era ( 819 ), the total number of people on both sides was 400. ※The Chronicles (720), before Emperor Kōtoku ascended to the throne (Kanbun version) "He also issued an order to the Ohotoneri to remove all swords."

〘名〙 (「おおどねり」とも) 令制での下級官人。交替で宮中に宿直し、行幸の供や雑用をした。中務省の左右大舎人寮(おおとねりりょう)に属し、四位、五位の子や孫をあてた。定員は各八〇〇人。弘仁一〇年（八一九）、左右あわせて四〇〇人となった。※書紀（720）孝徳即位前（寛文版訓）「亦帳内(ヲホトネリ)に命(みことのり)して皆刀を解か令む」
