A city in the state of Upper Austria in north-central Austria. Population 39,340 (2001). An iron town that developed at the confluence of the Steyr and Enns rivers, it was already a wealthy city in the state in the 15th century as a shipping point for the iron ore produced in the area. However, it fell into decline when influential citizens relocated after the Counter-Reformation, and it finally recovered in the 19th century with the establishment of an arms factory, and is now the center of the automobile industry. As it is located on a terrace, the historical landscape of the old town has been preserved to this day.
