A bird of the Charadriiformes order, family Aucunidae (illustration). Total length is about 36 cm. It breeds in the Bering Sea and North Pacific coasts of the Northern Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, the Aleut Islands, and western Alaska, and migrates a little south in winter. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird, but not in large numbers. It has an unusual vertically flattened beak, and can hold several fish at the same time. In summer plumage, the base of the beak is yellow and the tip is red. The top of the head, back of the neck, sides of the neck, throat, and upper surface of the body are black, while the face, chest, and belly are white.

チドリ目ウミスズメ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約36cm。北千島，カムチャツカ半島，アレウト列島，アラスカ西部などのベーリング海および北太平洋沿岸で繁殖し，冬は少し南へ移動する。日本には冬鳥として渡来するが，数は多くない。縦に平たい変わったくちばしをもち，同時に何匹も魚をくわえることができる。夏羽ではくちばしの基部は黄色く，先が赤い。頭上，後頸（こうけい），頸側，のど，体の上面は黒く，顔と胸から腹は白い。
