One puff, one sen

Japanese: 一服一銭 - いっぷくいっせん

〘 noun 〙① The act of selling a cup of green tea by the roadside for one sen. Also, the person who sold it. However, there is also a theory that it refers to a business that sells appropriate amounts in individual packets. ※Toji Yuri Documents - Ke, April 10th year of Oei (1403), joint petition for Dokaku and others, a tea seller for one sen per cup, in front of the Nandaimon Gate: "Respectfully petition, petition for the tea seller for one sen per cup, in front of the Nandaimon Gate." ② Around the Meireki era (1655-58 ), a merchant in Osaka dressed in Chinese attire offered a cup of tobacco for one sen. 〘名〙① 路傍で一服の煎茶(せんちゃ)を銭一文で売ったこと。また、その人。ただし、適当量を分包して売る業態をいうとの説もある。※東寺百合文書‐ケ・応永一〇年（1403）四月日・南大門前一服一銭茶売人道覚等連署条々請文「謹請申、南大門前一服一銭茶売人条々」② 明暦（一六五五‐五八）の頃、大坂で唐人の装束をした商人が、一服のタバコを一銭で吸わせたこと。〔随筆・八水随筆（1736‐41頃）〕
