Died: September 22, 1980. Tokyo critic. Graduated from the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo in 1926. While a student, he came to know Hideo Kobayashi and published "Ongaku to Shizen" (1925) in the magazine "Yamamayu". He developed a theory of pure art influenced by German idealism and French symbolism, and was recognized in the literary world with "Patriotic Poetry of Verlaine" (29) and "Nature and Purity" (32). At the same time, he wrote many music critiques, causing controversy with "On the Dissolution of the Music World" (33), and co-translating L. Shestov's "Philosophy of Tragedy" with Rokuro Abe (34), ushering in a period of "Shestovian Anxiety". In 1936, he became the editor-in-chief of "Bungakukai" and chaired a roundtable discussion with the Kyoto Philosophers titled "Overcoming Modernity". He continued to write critical works after World War II, including Rated Freedom (45), which criticized the state of liberation immediately after Japan's defeat, and Japanese Outsiders (58-59), which portrayed people who lived unique lives in the Meiji era and after. Along with Kobayashi Hideo, he was a promoter of modern criticism rooted in self-consciousness. He was awarded the Japan Art Academy Prize in 1986, a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1987, and a Person of Cultural Merit in 1988.

評論家。 1926年東京大学経済学部卒業。在学中に小林秀雄を知り，雑誌『山繭』に『音楽と自然』 (1925) を発表。ドイツ観念論とフランス象徴派の影響を受けた純粋芸術の理論を展開，『ヴェルレーヌの愛国詩』 (29) ，『自然と純粋』 (32) などで文壇に認められた。並行して多くの音楽評論を書き，『楽壇解消論』 (33) で物議をかもし，また L.シェストフの『悲劇の哲学』を阿部六郎と共訳 (34) して「シェストフ的不安」の時期を先導した。 36年『文学界』の編集責任者となり京都哲学派との座談会「近代の超克」を司会した。第2次世界大戦後も批評の筆をとり，敗戦直後の解放状況を批判した『配給された自由』 (45) ，明治以降を個性的に生きた人々を描いた『日本のアウトサイダー』 (58～59) などがある。小林秀雄とともに自我意識に根ざす近代批評の推進者である。 61年日本芸術院賞受賞，62年芸術院会員，72年文化功労者。
