Baptistery - Senreido (English spelling)

Baptistery - Senreido (English spelling)
A building attached to a church for the ceremony of baptism. In the past, it was a small rectangular room with a baptismal font in the apse. From around the 4th century, buildings with domes began to be built, and the plan was usually octagonal. This is the number next to the perfect number 7, and symbolizes the beginning of Christian life with baptism. Until the 10th century, baptistery buildings were built for adults by immersion, and were often grand, equipped with a water tank and often built separately from the church, with lavish decorations. However, as infant baptism became more common, outside of Italy, they became smaller in size, and gradually moved to a small room inside the church, where only a baptismal font was placed. Examples of monumental baptistery architecture include the one at Pisa Cathedral (circular, 1153-1278) and the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence (octagonal, 90).
