Halfbeak - Halfbeak

Japanese: クルメサヨリ - くるめさより

A fish of the family Halfbeakidae in the order Garfish. Its body is long and slender, with its lower jaw acting as a beak that protrudes forward of the upper jaw. For this reason, this species is called a half beak in English. However, it is not clear what purpose this beak serves. Its abdomen is silvery white and scaleless, but its back is blue-green and covered with scales. It resembles the marine halfbeak and is often confused with it, but it differs in that it has fewer vertebrae, fewer scales in one row, and its anal fin is located slightly further back, and it is also small, reaching only about 20 cm in total length.

ダツ目サヨリ科の魚。体は細長く，下あごがくちばしとなって上あごの前方に長く突出する。このためこの仲間を英語ではhalf beakと呼ぶ。ただし，このくちばしがなんの役に立つのかよくわかっていない。腹部は銀白色でうろこはないが，背部は青緑色でうろこに覆われる。海産のサヨリに似ており，しばしば混同されるが，脊椎骨数や1列のうろこ数が少なく，しりびれがやや後方に位置する点で異なり，全長も約20cmどまりで小さい。
