The cargo that is transported has various physical characteristics, such as liquids, powders, heavy objects, fragile goods, and temperature-controlled cargo, and transporting such cargo using specialized transport equipment (ships, freight cars, trucks, etc.) according to the cargo characteristics is called transportation by material. Examples include hopper cars for transporting powders and powders, refrigerated cars for transporting fresh fish, and tank cars for transporting petroleum products. On the railway, all of these are transported using freight cars suitable for each material (called freight cars suitable for each material).

貨物輸送の対象となる貨物には，液体，粉粒体，重尺物，易損品，定温貨物などさまざまな物理的特性をもっているものがあるが，このような貨物特性に応じた専用の輸送用具(船舶，貨車，貨物自動車など)による輸送を物資別輸送と呼ぶ。粉粒体輸送におけるホッパー車，鮮魚輸送における冷蔵車，石油製品輸送におけるタンク車などがその例であり，鉄道においてはいずれも各物資に適合する貨車(物資別適合貨車という)を用いて輸送する。
