A novel by British novelist J. Meredith. Published in 1879. Sir Willoughby Pattern, a wealthy gentleman, is a thorough egoist. When choosing a wife, he weighs up between Letitia Dale, a childhood friend who has feelings for him, and Constantia Durham, a brilliant woman, and chooses the latter, but her selfish nature is discovered and she abandons him. He hurriedly proposes to Clara Middleton, but again he reveals his true nature and the marriage falls through. He is forced to beg Letitia, who he initially rejected, by humbly begging her, and she finally agrees. This is a representative work that depicts the author's so-called "comedic spirit" by making full use of highly intellectual expressive techniques rich in aphorisms. It is also known for having influenced Natsume Soseki. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
