A perennial grass of the Grass family found in mountain forests, its overall shape is somewhat similar to that of the Japanese wheatgrass. Its Japanese name comes from Mount Azuma in Fukushima Prefecture, where it is grown. The stems grow singly or in clusters of 2-3 sparsely from a short rhizome, reaching a height of 60-80 cm and several nodes. The leaves are narrow lanceolate, 10-20 cm long and about 2 cm wide, and twist below the center, with the underside of the leaf exposed to the outside. The upper surface of the leaf is pale green, and the underside dark green. In summer, a single thin spike 10-15 cm long appears at the top of the stem, and spikelets hang down at the top and are intermittently attached to a hairy central axis, resembling the Japanese wheatgrass.
