A tholeiitic andesite that occurs in the ocean and is not orogenic, but on continental margins or island arcs [Carmichael: 1964]. It is rich in Fe and poor in Al 2 O 3 . In general, the Al 2 O 3 /(Fe 2 O 3 +FeO) value for andesite is greater than 2.0, but in icelandite it is less than 2.0 [Bowes: 1989, Middlemost: 1985]. It is named after the island of Iceland.
