It is also called lunar rhythm. Life phenomena related to the phases of the moon are widely seen in coastal organisms, and were already known in ancient Greece and China. Eunice fucata , a member of the family Euniceidae, which lives on the shallow seabed in Florida, performs reproductive schooling around the time of the waning quarter moon from late June to late July, and this has been known for a long time as the Atlantic palolo. Japanese tubular fish also perform reproductive schooling a few days after the new moon and full moon in October and November. On the sandy beaches of Southern California, large schools of grunion fish of the family Anserinidae come to spawn on the nighttime spring tides a few days after the new moon and full moon from March to September.
