Azuma Dance - Azuma Dance

The dance recitals of the Shinbashi Geigi Ren began in April 1925 (Taisho 14) at the Shinbashi Enbujo Theater in Tokyo. As a rule, they were held twice a year, in spring and autumn. They were descended from the Azuma Kai, which had been held since the end of the Meiji period, modeled after the Miyako Odori in Kyoto. After 1941 (Showa 16), the recitals were suspended due to the Pacific War, but were revived in 1948 (Showa 23). Star geisha such as the male role actor Marichiyo (real name Sano Kimie, 1908-1996) gained popularity by performing dance dramas by famous writers, and for eight years from 1951, the recitals were held for 25 days each in spring and autumn. From 1959, the recitals were mostly held in the spring only, and the period was later shortened, and from 1982, it has been held for four days at the end of May.

1925年（大正14）4月落成の東京・新橋演舞場で始まった新橋芸妓(げいぎ)連の舞踊会。春秋2回を原則とした。京都の「都をどり」に倣い明治末から行われてきた「東(あずま)会」の流れをくんでいる。1941年（昭和16）以後は太平洋戦争中のため休演し、1948年（昭和23）に復活。男役のまり千代（本名佐野キミ江。1908―1996）のようなスター性のある芸妓が著名作家の舞踊劇を演じて人気を集め、1951年からの8年間は春秋、各25日間盛況を極めた。1959年からはおおむね春だけで、のち期間も短縮され、1982年からは5月末に4日間行われている。
