…Enclosed binding is said to have begun in the early 14th century during the Yuan Dynasty in China, but after the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573-1619), a similar binding method using thread became popular. It is also called line binding in China and Kara toji in Japan, and became the mainstream binding method for Japanese books from the late Muromachi period to the Edo period. Since the Eastern printing method involved placing paper on a woodblock and rubbing the back side to print, only one-sided printing was possible, so line binding was a revolutionary binding method that filled the gaps of sticky leaf binding. …
