A perennial plant of the Iridaceae family. It grows 30-50 cm tall. Its leaves are sword-shaped. In early summer, flower stalks grow from between the leaves, and purple or white flowers bloom. It is sometimes planted on thatched roofs, as there is a popular belief that it will prevent fires. It is native to China.
