Italian singer and composer who contributed to the birth of opera. Born in Rome or Tivoli, he became a Florentine court singer around 1564. He participated in the performance of interludes at the Medici weddings in 79 and 89. As a member of the Camerata group, which studied the possibilities of new musical styles using ancient Greek music as a model, he attempted to revive Greek musical drama. In 1600, for the opera Euridice, which premiered for the wedding of Marie de' Medici and King Henry IV of France, he rewrote parts of the music to rival his ally Peri, and later completed the entire work and published it before Peri. His song collection New Music (1601) is a valuable testament to early Baroque music in the monodi (recitative) style.
