That is why the impact of the "Mexican financial crisis" on August 13, 1982 was so great. In the midst of an economic crisis characterized by (1) foreign debts of over $80 billion, (2) unprecedented high inflation, (3) the collapse of the peso, (4) the introduction of exchange controls, (5) the nationalization of the country's private banks, (6) a sharp increase in corporate bankruptcies and unemployment, and (7) a widening gap between the rich and the poor, the Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado (1934- ) administration was inaugurated on December 1, 1982. The causes of the financial crisis were: (1) a decline in foreign currency earnings due to a drop in oil prices, (2) inefficiency and huge budget deficits due to a mixed economy, (3) increased interest burdens due to rising international interest rates, (4) limits on industrial production capacity, (5) limits on transportation and distribution capacity, (6) limits on skilled labor and other human resources, (7) sluggish agricultural production and large amounts of food imports, (8) domestic capital shortages, and (9) intensifying labor movements and rising wages.
