Also called degu. A rodent-like mammal of the Octodontidae family. Found in grasslands and hills in western Peru and Chile at altitudes below 1,200 m. Body length 15 cm, tail length about 12 cm, head long and large, ears almost bare. Forepaws have four toes and hind paws have five, with bristles covering the sharp claws. Body fur is soft, sparsely mixed with long hair, tail hair gradually gets longer toward the tip, forming a tuft of black hair in the tip third. デグーともいう。齧歯(げつし)目オクトドン科のネズミに似た哺乳類。ペルー西部とチリの標高1200m以下の草原や丘陵地に分布。体長15cm,尾長12cm前後,頭は長く大きく,耳介はほとんど裸出する。前足に4指,後足に5指があり,足の指には剛毛があって鋭いつめを覆っている。体毛は柔らかく,まばらに長毛を混生,尾の毛は先へしだいに長くなり,先のほう1/3では黒い毛の房を形成する。体の背面は灰色ないし褐色,ときに橙色を帯び,目のまわりと腹面は黄白色。
