Awa Earth Pillars - Awa no Dochu

Japanese: 阿波の土柱 - あわのどちゅう
Awa Earth Pillars - Awa no Dochu

This scenic spot is located on the north bank of the Yoshino River in Awa-cho, Awa City, in northern Tokushima Prefecture. It was designated a national natural monument in 1934 (Showa 9). Layers of gravel have been eroded by rainwater to leave behind columnar shapes, with the upper earth pillar layer being alluvial fan deposits and the lower layer being marshland deposits. There are about 100 earth pillars standing in a forest, the largest of which is Hatodake on Mount Senboshi, which is 18 meters high and 15 meters in circumference. In 1967, it became Dochu Takagoe Prefectural Natural Park.
