...His debut work, "Geisha Yobukodori," published in 1777 (An'ei 6), used the names of two real-life geisha from the town to depict a love triangle with one customer, and his sequel, "Keiseikai Tora no Maki" (1778), was based on the story of the time when the blind loan shark Toriyama Kengyo bought Segawa from Matsubaya in Yoshiwara, and dramatized the true love affair in the pleasure quarters through a legendary structure. These stories laid the groundwork for his later development into human interest novels. Other works he wrote include the yellow-covered "Ichigo Senkin," which was written to coincide with the opening of the Zenkoji Temple, "Keisei An Ironic Treatise," which compares Yoshiwara and brothels in the form of a war chronicle, "Kyosei Kaishinansho," which tells the wisdom of connoisseurs (all 1778), and the humorous, witty "Osewaron" (1780), showing his diverse style.
