Among the most famous are the sardana of Catalonia (performed by a wind ensemble, in which people join hands and dance in a circle), the zortziko of the Basque Country (with its unique five-beat rhythm), the aurresku (an elegant dance derived from court dance), the espata-dantza (sword dance), the jota of Aragon (famous for its choreography in which men jump high into the air and for its purely Spanish melody), the seguidilla of La Mancha (with its very Spanish rhythm and melody, which spread to Andalusia and became the sevillanas), the fandango, which originated in Andalusia but has spread to other parts of the country, the danza prima and gilardilla of Asturias, the charrada of Salamanca, etc. There are many other notable folk dances, but one that deserves special mention is flamenco. …
