A perennial grass of the Poaceae family (APG classification: Poaceae). Also known as rough strawberry vine. The culms are clumpy and erect, 30-60 cm tall, and have inverted roughness along with the inflorescence branches. The ligules are lanceolate, membranous, and 3-8 mm long. Flowering season is May-July. The spikelets consist of several florets, and the glumes are somewhat the same shape, but much shorter than the glumes. The glumes have five veins, no awns, and white cotton-like soft hairs on the keel and lateral veins. A weed found in mountains and fields throughout Japan, distributed in China and eastern Siberia. The name comes from the fact that children use the culms to pierce and hold strawberry fruits. There are many closely related species, and they are distinguished by differences in the ligule, glume fluff, and the length of the anthers.

イネ科（APG分類：イネ科）の多年草。別名ザラツキイチゴツナギ。稈(かん)は株立ちして直立し、高さ30～60センチメートル、花序の枝とともに逆向きのざらつきをもつ。葉舌(ようぜつ)は披針(ひしん)形で膜質、長さ3～8ミリメートル。花期は5～7月。小穂は数個の小花からなり、包穎(ほうえい)はやや同形で、護穎(ごえい)よりかなり短い。護穎は5脈があり、芒(のぎ)はなく、竜骨と側脈に白色綿状の軟毛がある。日本全土の山野にみられる雑草で、中国、シベリア東部に分布する。名は、この稈を使って子供がイチゴの実を突き刺して持つことによるという。近縁の種類が多く、葉舌、護穎の綿毛、葯(やく)の長さなどの相違で区別する。
