…This magazine, edited by the writer Jean Donneau de Visé and containing court news, anecdotes, and short poems, was followed within a few years by similar magazines in Germany, England, and other countries. After the English printer Edward Cave launched the Gentleman's Magazine in 1731 and achieved success, many magazines were born with the word "magazine" in their name. The word originally meant a warehouse or storehouse, but by the mid-18th century it had become established as a word for magazines, and when the first two American magazines were launched in Philadelphia in 1741, they were called the American Magazine (founded by Andrew Bedford) and the General Magazine (founded by B. Franklin). …
