A general term for birds of the genus Corvus , family Corvidae, order Passeriformes. The birds that Japanese people generally call crows are the carrion crow Corvus corone (illustration) and the large-billed crow C. macrorhynchos (illustration), which breed throughout Japan. The carrion crow is found throughout most of the Palaearctic region, and breeds in Japan from Kyushu northward. It is about 50 cm long. It commonly lives in areas around cities where urbanization has not progressed much, in mixed environments of farmland, pastures, and forests, in mountainous areas, and in fishing villages.
