A type of street vendor who sells ointments made from toad oil. This ointment is said to be effective in treating wounds, cracks, chapped skin, and burns, and was used as a military ointment. It is made by collecting the white liquid secreted by toads when they attack an enemy or are stimulated, and selling it as medicine. However, rather than its medicinal value, it is more famous for the amusing sales pitches that toads used to sell the ointment on the streets at fairs and festivals from the Edo period through the Meiji period, attracting customers with their amusing sales pitches.
