1799‐1874 A French author of fairy tales. Her father, a Russian general who served as Governor of Moscow during Napoleon's invasion, fell out of favor with the Tsar, so she moved to France with her family in 1816 and married Count Ségur in 1819. She spent most of her life on her estate of Nouettes in Normandy, and many of her fairy tales are set in the region. She would make up stories to read to her young grandchildren on rainy days, but when her two granddaughters moved to London with their father, a diplomat, she began writing stories.
