Hammerstein, Oscar, II
Born: July 12, 1895 in New York
[Died] August 23, 1960, Doylestown, Pennsylvania. American musical lyricist and librettist. Both his father and grandfather were involved in opera and other entertainment. He studied law at Columbia University, but later turned to writing screenplays for musicals, television, and movies. Some of his early representative works include the musicals Rose Marie (1924) and Show Boat (27). In 1943, his first collaboration with R. Rogers, the musical Oklahoma! (43), was a huge hit and won a Pulitzer Prize. Since then, the duo of Hammerstein writing lyrics and Rodgers composing music produced many masterpieces, including Carousel (45), South Pacific (49, Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award), The King and I (51, Tony Award), and The Sound of Music (59, Tony Award).

(43) が大ヒットし,ピュリッツァー賞を受賞。以後ハマースタインの作詞,ロジャーズ作曲によるコンビで『回転木馬』 Carousel (45) ,『南太平洋』 South Pacific (49,ピュリッツァー賞,トニー賞) ,『王様と私』 The King and I (51,トニー賞) ,『サウンド・オブ・ミュージック』 The Sound of Music (59,トニー賞) など数々の名作を生んだ。
