An island in the central-southern part of the Lesser Sunda Islands (Nusa Tenggara). It consists of wavy table-like land. There are many volcanoes, and Mount Tambora (2,850m) caused one of the largest eruption in recorded history in 1815, raising its height from 4,000m to its present height. The northern coast has a complex indentation. It produces rice, corn, cotton, tobacco, sandalwood, etc., and is famous as a horse-producing region. The capital is Raba. Area: 13,980 ^km2 . Population: about 410,000 people.
