The birth of tin-glazed pottery in Flanders began in the early 16th century, when Italian potters, including Guido da Sabino (later renamed Guido Andries) of the Castel Durante kiln, emigrated to the free cities of Antwerp and Bruges and fired maiolica pottery there. After 1564, many potters fled from the Habsburg royal family's persecution of Protestants and wars to move to the north, Holland and Friesland, where they built kilns in Delft, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Middelburg, and Haarlem and fired beautiful tin-glazed pottery with colored maiolica paintings. …
