After pre-treating the surface of the ship's bottom shell, an anti-rust paint (No. 1 bottom paint, or AC) is applied as a primer, and then an anti-fouling paint (No. 2 bottom paint, or AF) is applied on top to prevent the adhesion of living organisms. The attached organisms include barnacles, serpulid worms (Cerpula), as well as oysters, mussels, bryozoans, and sea squirts, and the adhesion of these organisms is usually prevented by using poisons.
