A city in northwestern Somalia, northeastern Africa. Population: 231,000 (2002 estimate). Located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,300 meters near the border with Ethiopia, it enjoys a relatively cool climate. It is the administrative center of northern Somalia and was the summer capital during the time of British Somaliland. There is an international airport 8 km south.
