Calvino - Calvino (English spelling)

Calvino - Calvino (English spelling)

Italian novelist. Born in Cuba. Grew up in San Remo, northern Italy. His debut novel, The Spider's Web (1947), based on his experience fighting as a partisan at the end of World War II, is considered a representative work of neorealism. Literarily, he is said to have been the son of Pavese and Vittorini. Criticizing and disillusioning with postwar society, he left behind mere realist novels and wrote works such as The Viscount Split in Two (1952) and The Tree-Climbing Baron (1959) based on fantasy and allegory, and also published Space Comedy (1965) and The Invisible City (1972), incorporating elements of science fiction. His edited work, "Italian Folktales" (1956), is a monumental work of the 20th century, and his reinterpretation stories, "The Castle of Crossed Fates" (1973) and "A Traveler on a Winter's Night" (1979), are structured in a way that anticipates semiotics. He subsequently published "Let it Go" (1980), a collection of literary and social essays, and the novel series "Palomar" (1983). He died suddenly just before completing the manuscript for his series of lectures at Harvard University in the United States, "Lectures on the Literature of Calvino" (1988).
