A Hindu festival. It means "row of lamps." It is held in early November, but the date changes every year. It is a festival to honor the goddess Lakshmi, and lamps are placed in temples and around town. It is believed that Lakshmi will bring good luck and wealth to houses where lamps are placed. ヒンドゥー教の祭りの一つ。「灯明の列」の意。 11月の初旬に行われるが,開催日は毎年変る。女神ラクシュミーを供養する祭りで,寺院にも街中にも灯明が置かれる。灯明が置かれている家にはラクシュミーが幸運や富をもたらすと信じられている。インドのマルワリ人にとっては新年に相当する祭り。
