A former town in Nishisonogi County, central Nagasaki Prefecture. It consists of Kakinoura Island, Enoshima Island, Hirashima Island, and other islands off the west coast of the Nishisonogi Peninsula. It flourished as a coal mining town after coal mining began in Fukuura on Kakinoura Island at the end of the Meiji period, but the mine was closed due to a downturn in the coal industry and it fell into decline. Nakato Bridge spans between Kakinoura Island and Oshima Island. In April 2005, it merged with Nishisonogi County's Nishisonogi Town, Saikai Town, Oshima Town, and Oseto Town to become a city, Saikai City. 14.11 km2 . 2,296 people (2003).
