…His literary fame increased with romantic narrative poems based on Scotland's past, such as Marmion (1808) and The Lady of the Lake (1810). However, as Byron's fame as a budding poet grew, Scott realized the limits of his poetic talent and turned to novels. His historical novels, such as Waverley (1814), skillfully combined romantic adventures with the colorful lives of the common people against the backdrop of actual historical events, and won him fame throughout Europe. Scott's twenty or so novels were published anonymously under the name "The Author of Waverley," and are collectively known as the Waverley Novels. …
