[Birth] Around 12:00 [Died] 1263 King of Lithuania (reigned 1253-63). Polish name Mindowe. Founder of the Lithuanian state. Unified the country in 1236. He fought against the Mongols and annexed vast Russian territories. Converted to Christianity in 1251, and was granted the kingship by the Pope in 1253. In his later years, he fought against the Teutonic Knights, renounced Christianity in 1260, and later died an untimely death in a civil war. He is famous for a long poem by J. Słowacki.
