Fireproof stone

The name of a pale gray to white glassy rhyolite stone with a high air bubble content that is found on Niijima, Shikinejima, and Kozujima of the Izu Seven Islands in Tokyo. Because it is not very hard, it is quarried with hatchets and saws. Because it is light and has fire-resistant and heat-retaining properties, it is used for building blocks, lightweight aggregate, fire-resistant furnace material, purification filter material, and also as a material for sculpture. Stone of the same quality that is found at the foot of Mt. Amagi on the Izu Peninsula is used as garden stones.

東京都伊豆七島のうち新島、式根島、神津(こうづ)島に産する淡灰色ないし白色の著しく気泡に富むガラス質流紋岩の石材名。あまり硬くないので、手斧(ておの)や鋸(のこぎり)などで採石される。軽くて、耐火性および保温性があるため、建材ブロック、軽量骨材、耐火保温用炉材、浄化濾材(ろざい)などに利用されるほか、彫刻用材料としても使われる。伊豆半島天城山麓(あまぎさんろく)産の同質の石は、庭石に用いられる。
