The trade name of a synthetic fiber developed by the German company IG. (1) A polyurethane-based synthetic fiber developed in 1937. A condensation polymer of diisocyanate and glycol. The initial trade name was Perlon.U., and later became common as polyurethane. (2) A polyamide-based synthetic fiber (→ nylon fiber) developed in 1938. Made by ring-opening catalytic polymerization of ε-caprolactam in the presence of water. This is known as 6-nylon, and is different from the 6,6-nylon developed by DuPont.
