A novel by the American female writer Margaret Mitchell. Published in 1936. Scarlett O'Hara, an attractive and strong-willed woman born and raised on the Tara plantation on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, learns that her beloved Ashley is going to marry her cousin Melanie, and to spite Ashley, she forces her to marry Melanie's brother Charles, who is supposed to marry Ashley's sister. When the Civil War breaks out, her husband Charles goes to war and is killed, and Ashley also joins the army. Scarlett moves to Atlanta and works as a nurse with Melanie, but around that time she reunites with Rhett Butler, who supplies supplies to the Confederate Army and whom she met at the party where Ashley and Melanie's engagement was announced. When the Union Army begins their invasion of Atlanta, she asks Rhett for help in escaping with Melanie, who is in the final months of pregnancy. The Tara plantation falls into ruin due to the death of her mother and her father's mental insanity, and Scarlett has to work herself, covered in sweat. The Confederate Army was finally defeated, ushering in the difficult Reconstruction Period. In order to keep the plantation going, Scarlett seduces her sister's boyfriend and remarries him, but her husband dies, and she eventually marries Rhett, who is a rising star in the times. After the death of their daughter, Rhett leaves Scarlett. After Melanie's death, Scarlett is rejected by her former lover Ashley, and it is then that she realizes for the first time that it was Rhett she loved.

The story of Scarlett, the heroine of the novel, whose human character is a mix of vanity, love, and a competitive personality, is vividly portrayed against the backdrop of the turbulent times of the Civil War, captivating readers around the world. In 1936, the book became a best-seller, selling over one million copies in the United States, and has since sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

American independent producer David O. Selznick acquired the film rights immediately after publication, began shooting in the fall of 1938, and released it in December 1939 as a Technicolor epic with a running time of 3 hours and 40 minutes. Although Victor Fleming is credited as the director, several other directors were actually involved, so this can be said to be the work of producer Selznick. Scarlett was played by Vivien Leigh and Rhett Butler by Clark Gable. At the Academy Awards the spring after its release, it won a total of nine Oscars, including Best Picture, and was a huge hit. It was not released in Japan until September 1952 (Showa 27) due to the war. Since then, it has been screened repeatedly, including on television, to this day.
