Ferret badger

A general term for animals in the genus Melogale, family Mustelidae, order Carnivora, class Mammalia. Members of this genus Melogale live in the grasslands and light forests of Southeast Asia. There are three species: Everett's Ferret Badger (M. everetti ) is found in Borneo, the Ferret Badger (M. moschata ) is found in northeastern India, southern China, and further Indochina, as well as Java and Borneo, and the Burmese Ferret Badger (M. personata) is found in Nepal, Indochina, and Java. They are about 35 cm long and 15-23 cm long, with blackish fur, white or yellow faces, and white or reddish stripes on their backs. They hide in burrows during the day and are nocturnal. They are omnivorous and can climb trees. They give birth to 1-3 young in May and June. They are rarely kept as pets, but some areas welcome them as they help eliminate pests and mice from homes.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目イタチ科イタチアナグマ属に含まれる動物の総称。この属Melogaleの仲間は東南アジアの草原や明るい森林に生息。3種に分けられエバレットイタチアナグマM. everettiはボルネオ島に、イタチアナグマM. moschataはインド北東部から中国南部、さらにインドシナにかけてとジャワ島、ボルネオ島に、ビルマイタチアナグマM. personataはネパールからインドシナにかけてとジャワ島に分布する。体長35センチメートル前後、尾長15～23センチメートルで、体毛は黒っぽいが、顔は白か黄色、背中にも白ないし赤みを帯びた条がある。昼は巣穴に隠れ、夜行性。雑食で、木登りもする。5、6月に1～3子を産む。飼育されることはほとんどないが、家屋内の害虫やネズミを駆除してくれるので、歓迎する地域もある。
