Japan People's Liberation League

Japan People's Liberation League

The anti-war league was formed in April 1944 (Showa 19) during the Second Sino-Japanese War, mainly by Japanese soldiers who had been captured by the Chinese Communist Army. In November 1939, the first anti-war organization by Japanese soldiers, the Japanese Soldiers Awakening League, was formed in the liberated areas of Shanxi Province, and then in July 1940, Nosaka Sanzo and others who had come to Yan'an from Moscow established the Yan'an Branch of the Japanese Anti-War League in China. These two anti-war organizations were merged into the North China Federation of the Japanese Soldiers Anti-War League in China in August 1942, and further developed into the Japanese People's Liberation League with a broader political platform in April 1944. The league was founded with about 300 members, and advocated an end to the war, the overthrow of military dictatorship, and the construction of a new, free and democratic Japan, but by the end of the war it had grown to about 1,000 members.
