A marine animal belonging to the order Decapoda, class Crustacea, family Anomuraliidae. It lives in tide pools on open ocean reefs. It is found from Tokyo Bay to Okinawa and is commonly seen in various places, but not as common as the Japanese hermit crab. Its shell is gray-green. The phalanges of the walking legs are yellow at the base and tip, and black-brown in the middle and the tip of the front segment, creating a striking color contrast. The claws are bilaterally symmetrical and open and close horizontally. Coral reefs are often home to the red-striped side crab C. striolatus , which has red-brown vertical stripes on its walking legs, and the southern side crab C. corallinus , which has a uniform purple-brown body.
