Elasmopus japonicus (English name)

Japanese: イソヨコエビ（英語表記）Elasmopus japonicus

Order: Amphipoda, Class: Malacostraca, Family: Melitata, Family: Amphipodidae. Body length: about 1cm. A representative species of amphipod (→ Amphipods) that lives in the intertidal zone of rocky areas. They are found in abundance at the base of seaweed and calcareous algae. The male's second mandible is powerful and is used to hold down the female during mating. 軟甲綱端脚目メリタヨコエビ科。体長 1cm内外。岩礁地帯の潮間帯にすむヨコエビ類（→ヨコエビ）の代表種。海藻や石灰藻の根もとに多産する。雄の第2顎脚は強大で，交尾時に雌を押さえるのに使われる。尾節板が小さく，先端に小さなくぼみをもつ 2葉に分けられていることにより近縁種と区別される。（→甲殻類，節足動物，端脚類，軟甲類）
