Metanephrops japonicus (Nephrops japonicus)

This shrimp (illustration) of the family Nephropidae in Crustacea reaches a body length of 25 cm, and is so named because its orange-red body color resembles the red spots on the young leaves of the plant Chenopodium album. Its body shape when walking is reminiscent of a mantis shrimp, and it is also called Shakoebi along the Suruga Bay coast. The rostrum is powerful, with two pairs of spines on the upper edge and one pair on the lower edge, and there are five pairs of teeth on a ridge running backward from both sides of the upper edge of the rostrum, with five teeth on each side. The dorsal surface of the second to fifth abdominal segments has a somewhat complex relief pattern. The first three pairs of thoracic legs have pincers, but the first thoracic leg is particularly powerful, with a length equal to the body length.

体長25cmに達する甲殻綱アカザエビ科のエビ（イラスト）で，橙赤色の体色が植物のアカザの若い葉にある紅斑に似ているためこの名がある。歩行するときの体型がシャコを思わせ，駿河湾沿岸ではシャコエビとも呼ばれる。額角は強大で，上縁に2対，下縁に1対のとげがあり，額角上縁の両側縁から後走する稜線上に5対，その各側に5本の歯がある。第2～5腹節の背面にやや複雑な浮彫模様がある。前3対の胸脚ははさみをもつが，とくに第1胸脚が強大で，長さは体長に等しい。
